SUMMIT OVERVIEW

The Onero Institute seeks to better involve young people in the field of international affairs. We believe that young writers are an integral part of the internal discourse. Onero’s goals include youth empowerment, leadership development, and intergenerational dialogue. In the furtherance of these goals, we are pleased to share that we are holding a virtual summit on August 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2021. The Onero Institute Young Leaders Summit will be an annual event at which the Onero Institute brings its community together and highlights the work of youth researchers in international affairs. 

We will feature our researchers and contributors, and invite them to present their research alongside established academics and professionals in a series of panel discussions. Presenters will be speaking on topics in international affairs within four broad categories - 1.  International Security 2. Global Political Movements 3.  Rising Themes in International Affairs 4. Global Prospects, Development and Institutions. Join us as we bring together the leaders of today and tomorrow!

Presentation Title: A Contemporary Review of Taiwan's Security Posture

Presentation Time: Friday, August 6th, 2021 at 6:05pm EST

Speaker Bio: Josh Pope is a recent graduate of the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. He focuses on U.S. security and economic interests in the Indo-Pacific region. He currently serves as the Asia Contributor on the Delta Foreign Affairs Newsletter. Josh is from Queens, NY and enjoys getting involved with local politics in the city.

2. IVANA D'ARGENCE

Presentation Title: The Future of European Security: Strategic Autonomy

Presentation Time: Friday, August 6th, 2021 at 6:40pm EST

Presentation Description: As Europe looks to take more responsibility for its defense and security, talk of “strategic autonomy” has resurfaced and given rise to a great deal of controversy. How realistic is this foreign policy ambition? This article addresses its surrounding misconceptions, necessity, and feasibility in light of challenges and existing capabilities. 

Speaker Bio: Ivana D'Argence is a rising senior at The George Washington University, majoring in International Affairs. Her areas of interest include the United States' relations with Europe & Russia, the politics of the European Union, and comparative politics of the Middle East.

Presentation Title: The Tabled Question of Contiguity: Long-term Considerations for Connecting the West Bank and Gaza Strip

Presentation Time: Sunday, August 8th, 2021 at 12:15pm EST

Speaker Bio: Elad Raymond is co-founder and Executive Director of the Onero Institute. He is a fourth-year student in the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University majoring in International Affairs with a concentration in Conflict Resolution and a minor in GIS. He is from New York and his research interests include geography, peace studies, and the Middle East, with a focus on Israel Studies.

4. YASH BAJAJ

Presentation Title: Vaccine Nationalism and Multilateralism

Presentation Time: Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at 12:10pm EST

Presentation Description:  Discussing trends in vaccine allocation and distribution, while also emphasizing the importance and benefits of vaccine multilateralism over vaccine nationalism in order to meet global vaccination needs. 

Speaker Bio: Yash Bajaj is a third-year student at the George Washington University studying International Affairs and Economics with a concentration in Security Policy. He is from New Jersey, and interested in the politics of Western Europe and South Asia. He is also fluent in French and Hindi.

5. MARIA ALEXANDRA D'AGOSTINO

Presentation Title:  Understanding FGM in Sudan and Around the World

Presentation Time: Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at 3:20pm EST

Presentation Description:  Sudan has the fourth largest number of girls and women who have undergone a Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) procedure per capita. This research article outlines the causes and effects of the newly implemented legislation criminalizing all FGM practices throughout Sudan.

Speaker Bio: Maria Alexandra D'agostino is originally from Caracas, Venezuela, but she now resides in Weston, Florida with her family. She is a senior at the George Washington University studying Political Science and Criminal Justice with a certificate in French language, literature, and culture. As a first-generation student and because of what she witnessed first-hand in Venezuela, she has grown passionate about the preservation of human rights and the prevention of constitutional violations.

Presentation Title: The Rise of Hyderabad

Presentation Time: Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at 4:00pm EST

Presentation Description: As India continues to compete as an international superpower, development across different regions of the nation have reflected the immense growth of the nation. Cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi have witnessed the creation of hundreds of new startups and millions of venture capital dollars flowing into their regions. However, a black sheep contender for “golden child” of the Indian Subcontinent, must go to the city of Hyderabad. Hyderabad (and the greater state of Telangana) has taken numerous steps to create a strong foundation for long-term success, and this can be seen in three key areas: Community & Government Buy-In,  A Developing Educational System, and the Creation of Vital Onramps for Development.

Speaker Bio:  ​Rishi Narahari is a recent graduate of Miami University of Ohio studying Finance, Accounting, & Entrepreneurship. He is passionate about issues related to macro-economic development and issues within South/South East Asia and Africa. Prior to joining the Onero team, Rishi worked in the luxury retail, venture capital, and pharmaceutical industries. In the future, he would like to work in venture capital and become an entrepreneurial ecosystem builder in the state of Ohio.

7. EVERETT PUSTELL

Presentation Title: Genetic Data Protections in the US and EU

Presentation Time: Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at 4:45pm EST 

Speaker Bio: Everett Pustell is a fourth-year student at Miami University and comes from Mountain View, CA. He is pursuing a B.S. in Biology with a concentration on Genetics and a Minor in Political Sciences. In the future, Everett hopes to pursue Genetics in a Doctoral program and eventually work in the research industry.

Presentation Title: Deterring Foreign Disinformation Campaigns

Speaker Bio:  ​Andrew Ma is co-founder and Executive Director of the Onero Institute. He is a native of Seattle, Washington, and a fourth-year student at Williams College majoring in Political Science and concentrating in International Relations, American Foreign Policy, Justice and Law Studies, and Science and Technology Studies. He is currently also working in marketing at Perkins Coie. After graduation he wishes to pursue a career in international law.

Presentation Title: Karim Khan and the International Criminal Court

Speaker Bio:  ​Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut, Nikhil Samuel is a rising Sophomore at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University and hopes to pursue dual concentrations in International Politics and Security Policy. His interests include International law, Middle Eastern and South Asian Politics. In his free time, he enjoys a good podcast.

3. SHELLY LIM

Presentation Title: Climate Change and Health Equity 

Presentation Time: Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at 11:30am EST 

Speaker Bio: Shelly Lim is a public health graduate student at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. She focuses on epidemiology and health policy, with an interest in global health. Shelly is from New York City and she enjoys working on population health projects to improve health disparities in communities.

 

Presentation Description:  The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health inequities, disproportionately affecting people of color, minorities, and low-income communities. Will there be health care reform in time to face climate change?

Presentation Title: Lenin Moreno's Path to the Middle: An Institutional Development Model for Ecuador

Presentation Time: Sunday, August 8th, 2021 at 12:50pm EST

Presentation Description: This project explores three development models and their impact on Ecuador’s development over the past 20 years. COVID-19 presents a huge crisis for the developing country - but also a chance to change. The institutional development model provides middle-ground institutional incrementalism. In a region battered by crisis, will Moreno consider a shift in his neoliberal crusade, or will the country continue to be engulfed in social unrest?

Speaker Bio:  Felipe Deidan, a rising senior at The George Washington University from Quito, Ecuador, is majoring in International Affairs with concentrations in Latin America and a minor in Economics. He currently serves as Senior Event Coordinator at Onero. He has actively worked on several initiatives in the region, including social and development projects for indigenous groups through the Fundación Simon Bolivar in Quito. Furthermore, Felipe has interned at several Latin American organizations including the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), the Wilson Center’s Mexico Institute, and the Citizens' Climate Lobby Hispanic Outreach branch. As a native of Ecuador, he focuses on a people-first development approach and structured distributive leadership models influenced by marginalized communities. He hopes to promote social responsiveness through policy advocacy in Latin America.
